Mississippi finally bans slavery

Why didn’t the state ratify it earlier?
Why didn’t it come up till now?
Why didn’t the state ratify the amendment if they were already following it?

  1. 1. The reason the state did not have the amendment ratify until after the end of the Civil War was because the legislators were upset that they were not going to be reimbursed for the value of the freed slaves.

    2. This did not come up until now because many members of the state legislators said that they did not know that the amendment had not been passed until recently.

    3. The state did not ratify the amendment even though they were already following it because some of the state legislators hadn't known that the amendment was not ratified. AS a result, they assumed that the amendment was already is progress. Also, the sate legislators that did know that the amendment wasn't passed, maybe, did not want to bring up a failed amendment again or they were too busy with other issues to pay attention. All of these factors can contribute to why the amendment was not ratified.

    3. Some people didn't know it was already ratified. Legislatures also assumed that it was in progress.

  3. There are quite a few reasons the state of Mississippi didn't ratify it earlier, one being the very logical initial reason of fear for not being reimbursed for all the freed slaves that the people of the state paid good money for. As for why they didn't decide to ratify it earlier, what the article says about them simply not knowing it hadn't been ratified already seems logical, and with all they had to do in the day, it seemed like a time-consuming, wasteful thing to do.

It probably came up just now because someone probably brought to the attention of the state legislators that, legally, someone could get away with slavery in the state, though the person who would have commited the offense might have been arrested anyways, as it's a little arbitrary.

They likely ratified the amendment to get the matter out of the way, so future legal debacles that might arise out of it can be avoided.

  4. Why didn’t the state ratify it earlier?
Because the state legislators were upset they were not going to be reimbursed for the value of freed slaves.

Why didn’t it come up till now?
Because many of the current members of the state legislature said they did not know the amendment had not been ratified. Sen. Hillman Frazier also helped raised the issue earlier.

Why didn’t the state ratify the amendment if they were already following it?
Because legislature assumed the amendment was in progress, they didn't know it had already ratified.

  5. 1) Mississippi did not ratify the 13th amendment earlier was because legislators of the state feared that they were not going to be reimbursed for the value of freed slaves.

    2) The issue did not arise untill now because many members of the state legislature today said that they did not know the amendment had not been ratified. This was untill Sen. Hillman Frazier raised the issue earlier in the year of 1995.

    3) There were still people that did not realize the amendment had been ratified. Some legislatures still thought the amendment was in progress.

The State did not ratify it earlier because they were upset over the fact that they would not be reimbursed for the value of freed slaves.
    2) Why didn’t it come up till now?
The problem did not come up until 130 years after the ratification of the 13th amendment because the state legislature did not realize that they had not made it official in their state.
    3) Why didn’t the state ratify the amendment if they were already following it?
The state did not officially ratify the amendment because they thought that the amendment was already in progress of being passed.

  7. 1. Mississippi legislators at the time were concerned they would not be paid for the slaves.

    2. Current members of the Mississippi legislature did not know the amendment had not been ratified until the point was brought up in 1995 by state Senator Hillman Frazier.

    3. The state legislators weren't aware that it hadn't already been passed. Prehaps they didn't believe they had to pass it, since all the other states had already passed it.

  8. 1. This was not passed before now because they didn't pass this amendment right when the Civil War came to a close. They didn't want to ratify it because they were afraid they wouldn't be reimbursed for the value of the slaves that they gave up.

    2. This hasn't come up until now because it really hasn't been an issue and wasn't brought to the peoples' attention until now. Senator Hillman Frazier just brought it to the attention of the state and since the state was already following it, most people didn't even realize that they had not ratified the amendment already.

    3. The state probably didn't ratify the amendment even though they were already following because they were unaware that they hadn't ratified it. Because you do not need unanimous approval of an amendment for it to be put into place and thus followed by all the states, it really didn't matter if they had ratified the amendment or not, they still had to follow it. People hadn't owned slaves in so long, they just didn't think about it.

  9. 1. The states didn't ratify it earlier for two reasons, one, they didn't know that the bill hadn't already been passed, and two, everyone was concerned with the loss of value on the slaves and their freedom.

    2. It didn't come up until Sen. Hillman Frazier raised the issue.

    3. Some state representatives in the legislature did not know and the issue may not have been as important during the time as other issues.
