Media Functions

Score keeper:
Voter Unrest Echoes That of 1994, Poll Shows (The Washington Post)

This is a Score Keeper article because it talks about recent polling and compares it to a previous election in 1994 and which way voting is beginning to lean. It is counting results and estimating future trends about who will take over the House or Congress. Voters are becoming disappointed with how Washington works as well as the Democratic Congress (as they were in 1994), and so it’s threatening the Democratic congressional majority. Slightly over half of the population isn’t satisfied with how Obama is handling being in office (52%), which is the same amount that was dissatisfied in 1994 with Bill Clinton, according to exit polls. This could mean that the Republican Party could regain control in the future.

Gate keeper:
Axelrod to Leave White House Early in 2011 (The Washington Post)

This is a Gate Keeper article because it uncovers information that nobody would have heard of otherwise; it is said that Alexrod will leave the White House in the next year, the man who had been standing next to Obama since the beginning of his presidency. Also according to this article, the White House is extending the temporary tax cuts which doesn’t please most liberals, but the Democratic Party is willing to negotiate with the Republicans, even though Democrats wish to extend tax cuts for the middle-class whereas Republicans want to keep tax cuts for those who earn over $250,000 per couple.

Watchdog:

This is a Watchdog article due to unearthing a scandal of Rangel, a Capitol Hill figure who violated ethics again since the ’80-’82 trials. He was brought up on charges for not paying taxes and fundraising improperly, and this is a big shock to many. He is found guilty of 11 out of 13 charges against him, but he used to be one of the most powerful barons of Capitol Hill. He skipped out on a trial that he had demanded right away; now they are saying that he won’t ever hold another gavel again, and according to estimates and predictions, he will face very competitive primaries to hold his position.

This will restore order and fairness to our tax code, and put democrats in a powerful position. This story informs the public about Obama’s tax cuts, and acts as a watchdog.

Scorekeeper (Exit poll: Johnson, Walker victories in Wisconsin)

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/behind-the-numbers/2010/11/exit_poll_johnson_walker_victo.html

This article about an exit poll represents the scorekeeper function of the media. In the article, percentages in favor of certain candidates for governor were presented as well as the public's opinion on the most pressing issues. Two Republicans had won over the majority for Wisconsin's Senator and Governor. Of the 27% of people who identify themselves as independent, they broke 55 to 43 percent in favor of the Republican candidate, Johnson. Furthermore, people who disapproved with how President Obama's performance in office has been mostly voted for Johnson by an 86 to 13 percent margin. All of these statistics show that the media posts the scores in elections and in approval ratings. 65% of thee people in Wisconsin believe the the economy was the most pressing issue; this is a poll about public policy and is also a scorekeeper function by the media.

Gatekeeper (Obama enlists big names to push for nuclear treaty)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/18/AR2010111800507.html

This newspaper article depicts the gatekeep function of the media. Recently, Obama convinced Democrative Senate leaders to push for a treaty between Russia. Under the treaty, the Us and Russia would have to lower their strategic warhead count from about 2000 to 1550. The President stresses that this foreign policy issue is a priority and that it needs to be passed with speed. The GOP Senators though are hesistant and against the issue, advocating that they wanted to maintain the amount of warheads carried. I wouldn't of known anything about this swift action that was taken. I trust that the source is reliable and that it is unbias towards any side.

Watchdog (Governor Gone Wild: The Blagojevich Scandal)

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1865781,00.html

This article illustrates the watchdog functions because it unearthed the entired scandal of Blagojevich. After even knowing that the FBI had been keeping tabs on him, Blagojevich attempted to bribe people for Obama's seat in the Senate; giving it to the highest bidder. Furthermore, Obama and a member of his cabinet had stated proudly awhile back that they worked with Blagojevich, but now they keep their distance from him. Watchdog's are in search for scandals like these, and each article about this event deteriorates the public face of the governor.

This article explains how the media is a scorekeeper. The article is showing the outcome of the electoral process in each state election. The media defines scorekeeper as being the resource that people use to find out who won an election. The article is posting different state elections, giving information to Washington Post viewers as to who won in different states.

This gives the Police Department a bad image and reputation.

Gatekeeping in the Media

The media shows gatekeeper by informing the public of an issue that most likely wouldn’t have been established in the United States. In this article, Israel is attempting to bring more security guidelines for commercial airplanes flying into Israel. The United States wouldn’t have been informed on this issue because Israel is across the ocean. Although this piece doesn’t affect us, it’s important because it is about the world’s safety and how to improve it.

This article informs us about a fleet of airplanes grounded for at least 72 hours due to oil leaks, which supposedly caused a mid-air explosion and had to make an emergency landing in Australia. The "gatekeeper" function is found in this article because this type of information, because it being a international issue rather than a national one, will be less known and heard about unless read or seen in the news.

3. Fresh Off Victories, Republicans Share Their Plans

This left the seats in the House at 239 Republicans to 187 Democrats. Illustrated through the scorekeeper function, we see the constant battle between the Republicans and Democrats in the news, and through this article, we see this competition clearly. You could also look at the 239 to 187 as a score, and Republicans are winning by a land-slide.

http://www.oilwatchdog.org/2010/11/bp-cost-cutting-was-a-culture-not-a-set-of-rules/

Article 1 Title: BP Cost-Cutting was a Culture, not a Set of Rules

This article demonstrates a watchdog function of the media because it is a reporter who went out and looked up information on BP and the oil spill and saw that BP was not following the EPAs standards. Plus she showed that BP know about the faulty pip but just chioce to not fix it. That is why I think this is a watchdog article.

http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Blogs/2010/11/15/Debt-Watch-Tea-Party-Ready-to-Rumble.aspx

Article 2 Title: The Tea Party: Ready to Rumble

The United States has a two party systme which is made up of the Democrats and the Republicans. But what if a third party would enter the game, the Tear Party. It is a rapidly growing party that i think will turn into a new party altogether. I also would have never know about it if it was not for this article, which is why this article is a gatekeeper article.

Articles Activity: Functions of the Media

Article 1: "N.Y. Rep's Spokeswoman Fired for Providing List of Opponent's 'Jewish Money' Donors" Fox News, http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/30/new-york-democrat-hits-gop-challenger-jewish-money/

This is an example of a watchdog function of the media, because they are reporting on an instance where the Spokeswomen for New York has broken the rules. The man's co-workers have payed closed attention to his actions, trying to make sure that they abide by all laws. When trying to challenge Mike Grimm for collecting out of district money from people, Jennifer Nelson, the New York Democratic Rep's spokesperson, provided the names of all the people that Grimm collected money from in Florida and Manhattan. This shows how the media watched Grimm's actions to see that laws were broken.

Article 2: "7 U.N. Troops Hurt, Attacked by Haitians Blaming Foreigners for Cholera Epidemic" The Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/15/AR2010111506047.html

This is an example of a gatekeeper article because it explains a situation that is occurring in Haiti, which is halfway across the world from us, and we would have no way of knowing this was going on if the media had not reported on it to us in the United States. The media explains how Haitians are revolting against the government and United Nations peacekeepers because they believe that foreigner have begun a cholera epidemic. This would never have been known anyone if the media didn't tell us.

Article Activity: Functions of the Media

Article 1: "Shanghai high-rise fire kills 42" Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/15/AR2010111500776.html

This article illustrates the Gatekeeper function of the media. I'm able to classify this article as a gatekeeper because without this report I would have never heard of the fire due to the fact that I live halfway around the world from the scene. It's not like if I didn't read the paper I would have saw it happen while on my way to school or anything. Another reason I consider this a gatekeeper is that it comes from a reliable soure, the Washington Post, that I am able trust to give me, the reader, the truth and nothing but the truth.

Article 2: "Senator. Saxby Chambliss aide fired over anti-gay comment" Politico http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1010/43004.html

The article mentioned above is an example of the Watchdog function of the media. Watchdog articles tend to make sure that people in office, whether national or state, are abiding to all laws. The reporter often has to try and find the problem, it doesn't just appear. Much like when Senator Saxby was fired since the public found out that he posted a blog comment saying "All [gays] must die." The senator didn't publicly post this with his name under it, so clearly a reporter snuck around to find out information against any type of legal personnel. The post was tracked back to an IP address in the Senators office, more proof that there was investigative journalism present.

Article 3: "Texas G.O.P's Inescapable Truth: We have Met the Enemy and He is Us" The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/us/politics/14ttramsey.html

Within this article there are clear findings that show that this can be categorized as a Scorekeeper article. Scorekeeping is about who is holding the power. In this case it is who is holding the power in the Texas house. The house used to be equally distributed, 76-74 in 2008. Now Republicans have gained even more power and outnumbers the Democrats by 48 people, the
"score" now being 99-51. There are so many republicans that now republicans are fighting republicans on issues, they are finding that they are not sharing the power with democrats anymore but with themselves. This is a scorekeeper article because it clearly shows numerically who is holding power in a legislative house.
