Functions of the media

Article 1- GOP: Dems violated senate rules by cutting off reading of sanders amendment.
http://spectator.org/blog/2009/12/16/senate-gop-says-dems-violated
  • This article represents the watchdog function of the media. Since it shows somebody from the government like senator, president etc. getting in trouble by breaking the law or rule. In this one they say that the parliament allowed sen. Bernie Sanders to cut off the reading of his single prayer proposal. The rule is that if the amendment is introduced, then it has to be read by the senate floor unless rest of senate agrees to cut it off. So that means that the senator broke the rule by cutting it off on his own.
Article 2- As cholera worsens, violence breaks out in haiti.
http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/the-americas/101116/cholera-outbreak-haiti-violence
  • This article represents the gatekeeper function of the media. Its this since we would never Know if this article it true or not since it happens on the other side of the world. That means that we have to believe this source about this news, this is the only source. Haiti isn't that close to us for people here to know everything that is going on there and we don't have the same news system as them. In this article violence breaks out there so without this article we wont know about it.
Article 3- Barack Obama wins conservative Virginia his win over McCain turned the typically red state blue. http://politics.usnews.com/news/campaign-2008/articles/2008/11/04/barack-obama-wins-conservative-virginia.html
  • This article represents scorekeeper function of the media. Since it shows who is winning in a election in the government, it could show who won a state or election. This article shows that Obama won the state of Virgina over McCain. Which shows what state he won and keeps you informed whose winning what, So people could keep track of whose in the lead.
