Articles Activity: Functions of the Media

Article 1: "N.Y. Rep's Spokeswoman Fired for Providing List of Opponent's 'Jewish Money' Donors" Fox News, http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/30/new-york-democrat-hits-gop-challenger-jewish-money/

This is an example of a watchdog function of the media, because they are reporting on an instance where the Spokeswomen for New York has broken the rules. The man's co-workers have payed closed attention to his actions, trying to make sure that they abide by all laws. When trying to challenge Mike Grimm for collecting out of district money from people, Jennifer Nelson, the New York Democratic Rep's spokesperson, provided the names of all the people that Grimm collected money from in Florida and Manhattan. This shows how the media watched Grimm's actions to see that laws were broken.

Article 2: "7 U.N. Troops Hurt, Attacked by Haitians Blaming Foreigners for Cholera Epidemic" The Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/15/AR2010111506047.html

This is an example of a gatekeeper article because it explains a situation that is occurring in Haiti, which is halfway across the world from us, and we would have no way of knowing this was going on if the media had not reported on it to us in the United States. The media explains how Haitians are revolting against the government and United Nations peacekeepers because they believe that foreigner have begun a cholera epidemic. This would never have been known anyone if the media didn't tell us.

Articles 3: "Republicans Win Solid House Majority" Yahoo News, http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101103/ap_on_el_ho/us_house

This article is an example of the scorekeeper function of the media, because it describes who is holding the power in a certain place, such as the House of Representatives. The Republicans have gotten back nearly 60 of the formerly Democrat seats, and now have majority of the House seats. This article shows with specific statistics who is holding power in the House of Representatives.
